I just got finished with the first section of the AT for this trip so far. On Monday, Cough Drop left me in Pearisburg, Virginia, and I proceeded to hike about 100 miles to the town of Catawba, just outside of Roanoke.
It started out with the remnants of that nasty storm that hit the mid-Atlantic last week, but quickly turned into blistering hot and sunny conditions. The last time I was in this area, it was pretty nasty, so I missed the tremendous views from Wind Rock, Kelly’s Knob, the Dragon’s Tooth, and McAfee Knob. Not so, this time! Virginia used to be one of my less favorite states on the AT. Now I think it’s right up there with the other southern states as a pretty gorgeous section of trail.
After hanging out with my old pal, Groovasaurus, yesterday and today, I caught another ride with Cough Drop to his place in North Carolina. Tomorrow we head down to Georgia to get on the Appalachian Trail at the beginning, right in the middle of the new hiker wave!
