I’m in Franklin, North Carolina now, and about to leave. It’s been a crazy week since Hiawassee. I started hiking much slower, but hanging out with three other hikers: Hans, Giggles, and Tony. Good times, late days, and pretty much taking it easy.
The views in North Carolina, with the high peaks and lots of nice outcrops, were pretty amazing. Especially in the evenings when the haze cleared.
We’re splitting up with Hans from here (hopefully to meet again later), and I’m going to keep a steady pace through the Smokey Mountains so I can get to Hot Springs in time to catch a ride back to Georgia. Not much time for updates along the way, but I’ll see what I can do.
Right now, we’re basically trying to escape from the giant Hiker Bash in Franklin. Yesterday there were well over a hundred hikers pouring into town with beer, booze, and bad breath aplenty. Hopefully that means the trail will be less crowded in the next few days.
