Before I leave for the summer, I have to share one more thing that I found recently.
In the last several years I’ve often thought that it would be a good idea to make a web-based map of all the hiking areas in Maine so as to have a resource for Maine hikers that compiled the various hiking locations in one major source of information. There are several good guidebooks for Maine hikers, but there are so many trails out there, some old, some new, some mapped, some not, that it’s difficult to find the information about the hikes that you want to get. A web-based map of all kinds of hiking areas would be amazing, and it might draw some more people to the state’s glorious footpaths. So many more people go to New Hampshire and Vermont for their more famous hiking trails, but my humble opinion is that Maine’s are without equal in the East.
Well, as it turns out, my daydreaming is no longer necessary. Maine Trail Finder, a relatively new site, is a terrific place. I can’t really describe it all, but the site speaks for itself. It’s simple, effective, and an absolute treasure trove of hiking information. I think their goal is to have all of the hiking trails in the entire state show up on their site. There are over a hundred trails listed and mapped now. Go check it out. And spend more time in Maine.
